The spicy heat index of peppers is measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHU), which assesses the amount of capsaicin in peppers. Capsaicin is the compound in chilies that makes them spicy. Cayenne peppers have between 30,000 and 50,000 SHU, while Habaneros have between 100,000 and 350,000 SHU - for about 10 times more piquancy.
