Print developed from Probably Ubi; Côte d’Ivoire, Face Mask, 20th century, from the exhibition The Language of Beauty in African Art.
In some cultures, the ugly and the beautiful are brought together in a gendered pairing, with male masks that combine animal and human features set against female masks that exemplify the local canon of physical attractiveness. Arresting examples of such some complementary pairs can be found in the masquerades of Senufo in Côte d’Ivoire and Igbo in Nigeria.

In excellent condition. One very slightly bent corner tip in white margin.
Côte d'Ivoire is a West African country with beach resorts, rainforests and a French-colonial legacy. Abidjan, on the Atlantic coast, is the country’s major urban center. Its modern landmarks include zigguratlike, concrete La Pyramide and St. Paul's Cathedral, a swooping structure tethered to a massive cross.
