The photographs produced by the FSA (Farm Security Administration) during the Great Depression are considered one of America's greatest artistic legacies. This project launched the careers of young, outstanding photographers such as Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Ben Shahn, Carl Mydans, Arthur Rothstein, Marion Post Wolcott, and Gordon Parks, who traveled across America, creating photographs with powerful appeal and poetic beauty. FSA photographs have been exhibited and published in the thousands, and we may feel we know them well.
Jill Mora and Beverly Brannan have unearthed previously unknown, valuable works from the vast archive held at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. This is the most comprehensive publication, rightfully recognizing the FSA photographers as the creators of a new American photographic art.
