Glass fire grenades were common fire extinguishers from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, designed to be thrown at a fire to break the glass bulb and release a chemical agent, such as saltwater or carbon tetrachloride (CTC), to suppress the flames. While early versions were decorative and filled with saltwater, later versions used more effective but highly toxic CTC, which was banned in the 1950s due to its health hazards. The grenades lost their popularity to modern, more effective, and safer fire extinguishers, though some new designs using fire retardant powders have seen a recent comeback.
