【Fantagraphics / book】"SUN RA/Art on Saturn" The Album Cover Art of Sun Ra's Saturn Label /pp-2511-5

Back in stock!!!!
Long-awaited restock♪

The first complete collection of album art, covering all the covers of the Saturn label, as well as hundreds of handmade, unique sleeves and disc labels designed by Sun Ra himself and members of his Arkestra.

Compiled from private collections around the world, this book is the first to comprehensively cover the record jackets of the Saturn label, and also includes hundreds of one-of-a-kind designs for sleeves and disc labels hand-drawn by Sun Ra and members of his Arkestra.

Sun Ra, known as a pioneer of Afrofuturism, mastered a wide range of styles including jazz, R&B, exotica, Afro-hybrid, electronic, big band, piano solo, orchestra, experimental music, and chamber music.

During his 45-year recording career, he released a vast number of albums and was the first black musician to own an independent label, which he named "Saturn" after the planet he claimed to have been born on.

The Saturn LP jackets released from 1957 to 1988 stand out with their unique and established worldview that no one can imitate. Some were printed on printing presses, but many were handmade and sold at live performances, clubs, and through mail order.

The handmade, one-of-a-kind jackets of the Saturn label are now collector's items, selling for hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars, and are not just record packages, but works of art in themselves.

Essays by Irwin Chusid, the administrator of Sun Ra's works, John Corbett, a prominent Sun Ra scholar, and Glenn Jones, who entered into a sales agreement with Sun Ra in the 1970s and distributed countless homemade covers, offer unique insights into the life and work of Sun Ra and his partner at Saturn, Alton Abraham, two "planets," adding another layer of flavor to the work.
