Alpaca knit yarn is classified by "micron," a unit that represents the thickness of the fiber.
The smaller the number, the finer and more supple the yarn, and the higher its market value. THE INOUE BROTHERS uses "Royal Alpaca," the highest-grade yarn used for high-gauge knits, which is about 18.5-19.0 microns. "Baby Alpaca" is the next grade.
Pilling is represented by the numbers "1-5." For example, cashmere is generally "2," and the softer the yarn, the more likely it is to pill.
Royal Alpaca is "4," and Baby Alpaca is "4-5." Although the softness is almost the same as cashmere, it is twice as durable and less likely to pill.
Royal Alpaca is durable enough, but Baby Alpaca is ideal for items that are used heavily on a daily basis.
Alpaca has the characteristics of a high-tech material, even though it is a natural material. When worn indoors, the fibers stand up, increasing heat dissipation, and when worn outdoors in the cold, the fibers lie down, increasing heat retention.
Also, alpaca does not contain oils or lanolin that can cause allergic reactions, so it is very gentle on the skin and comfortable to wear.
