Found by family member near the banks of Choptank River in 1960s. Appears to be a sandstone milestone. Approx measurements 4 1/2" h x 6" diameter , square carved opening 2 1/2" x 2" Approx weight is 8 1/4 lb. Capt John Smith discovered the Choptank Indians who spoke Algonquian and were a sub division of the Nanicote Indians. There were 4 tribes in the area the Piscataway, the Assateagues, the Pokomoke, & Nanicoates. We have no idea but can only assume it was a tribe close to Nanicoates from where it was found. We are not collectors or professionals. Family is parting with things due to mounting medical bills.
