Design:
Obverse (front): Features a Forest Elephant within a circle above a star, with the inscription "REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA".
Reverse (back): Shows a sailing ship and a bird to the right of a palm tree within a 3/4 circle, along with the date "1972" and the denomination "ONE CENT." It also bears the inscription "THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE".
Composition: Made of Bronze, although official US mint records list these coins as being made of Copper and Zinc (Brass).
Mint: The coin in the image was minted at the Denver Mint in the United States.
Mintage: The 1972 Liberia 1 Cent coin from the Denver Mint had a mintage of 10,000,000.
Historical Context: Liberia first issued copper 1 and 2 cents coins in 1847 and 1862. A full coinage set, including 1, 2, 10, 25, and 50 cents, was introduced in 1896. After a gap, new coins, including the 1 cent, were re-introduced in 1937 and augmented in 1960.
