Natural Pink and Green Elbaite Tourmaline Crystals in feldspar matrix from California. There are smaller pink crystals and a larger tourmaline with a pink exterior and green coloration in the center. It looks like reverse watermelon coloration to me!
This crystal is from KC Naylor mine in Gem Hill / Mesa Grande district, San Diego county, California.
It weighs 224 and measures 2.33” x 2.89” x 2.02”.
Elbaite is a variety of the tourmaline mineral group and is the source of almost all gem-quality tourmaline, named after its discovery on the island of Elba, Italy. It's known for its diverse range of colors, including green, red, blue, and yellow, and often exhibits multicolor zonation, such as the "watermelon tourmaline". Elbaite is found in igneous and metamorphic rocks, particularly granite pegmatites, and can display interesting optical effects like the "cat's eye" or "pleochroism" (a change in color with viewing angle).
